Arezzo Churches, Art and Architecture

Much of the art in Italy is found in its many churches.  The most obvious example is the Vatican with its overwhelming volumes of art of all types.  There is so much you can't see it all, even if it were all out for open access.  Whether or not you are a student of the history of art and architecture, when you are in Italy, you must visit the churches!   Here are some of the churches of Arezzo.

San Francesco built in 1322, with the famous frescos of the Legend of the True Cross by Piero della Francesca

The Pieve de Santa Maria built in the 12th century, one of the most beautiful Romanesque churches in Tuscany.

The Duomo (previously mentioned) with its beautiful stained glass windows and the travertine steps that surround the outside.

San Domenico, founded in 1275 is filled with remaining pieces of frescos and a crucifix by Cimabue.

Each church serves as a mini museum for art and architecture for its time.
